Salsa: The Spicy Arts of Mexico

Explore the arts of Mexico from ancient to contemporary. Create self-portraits inspired by Frida Kahlo, paintings inspired by Amate Bark Paintings and fantastical sculptural animals inspired by the Oaxacan folk art tradition.

The Mystery of Asian Arts

Embark on an imaginary trip to Asia! Discover how Chinese artists have used bamboo brushes to paint and write calligraphy, create Japanese Haiku poems inside a hand-made book and explore the art of shadow puppets from Indonesia and lots more.

Animation Station

“And this year’s Oscar goes to…you!” Create your very own animated short video using just your imagination and drawing talents. Each student receives a video of the class animations. Guests are invited to your premiere on the last day.

Fantastical Folk Art Animals

Explore the unique qualities of folk art animals and the different ways that folk artists illustrate animals in paintings, drawings and sculpture to express their personality. Using papier mâché, found objects and more, create a folk art inspired sculptural animal that expresses your personality and characteristics.

Let’s Talk about It!

Discover how artists throughout history and in contemporary society use the visual image to communicate a message and describe the world around them. Create cave paintings in charcoal, draw like an Egyptian with a modern twist, create the perfect athlete/movie star inspired by the ancient Greeks and use Celtic interlace to illuminate a personal poem.

Art in the Park

Instructor: Donna Iona Drozda
Create drawings of the flora and fauna of First Landing State Park. Use these drawings back in the CAC studio as inspiration for watercolor and resist paintings, hand-colored prints and a beautiful painted nature portfolio. Students will meet at CAC on Monday, Thursday and Friday and at First Landing State Park on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Claymation

Use teamwork to write your script, sculpt your characters, create props and shoot your short video, complete with sound. Guests are invited to your premiere on the last day.

Drawing and Painting Horses

Instructor: James O’Connor
Spend a day sharpening your skills of observation as you sketch magnificent horses in motion at the Arbor Gate Farm in Pungo. Use your discoveries to develop finished artworks at the CAC studios using a variety of drawing and painting media. Students will meet at Arbor Gate Farm in Pungo on Wednesday and at CAC on Thursday and Friday.

Murals that Matter

Instructor: Holly Ackiss
Design and create a collaborative mural using paint, oil pastels, markers and more. The final mural will be donated to a local non-profit organization. Students will produce works of art that are beneficial to the community while learning the benefits of teamwork. Drawing and painting techniques will be emphasized throughout the course. Each student will take home preliminary designs as well as an individual small mural and photograph of the group project.

My Family Tree

Go on a journey of self-discovery to inspire symbolic portraits about you, your family and heritage. Gather stories and found objects from home and combine them with drawing, painting and mixed media techniques to create a sculptural box filled with personality. It’s a great way to bring the family together and instill pride in a young artist!

The Glass Lab THIS class IS FULL

Experiment in the glass lab and explore how glass can be recycled from everyday use into art using techniques such as glass casting and fusing amongst others. Create a bejeweled painted glass collage, fused glass jewelry, unique glass picture frames and an amazing fused glass plate.

Create sculptures using unconventional materials and mixed media inspired by CAC’s summer exhibition, Transformed. Explore the galleries with sketchbooks for artistic inspiration and think creatively about how you can transform objects from everyday life into artwork.

Origami Paper Sculpture

Instructor: Rich Gray
Learn the basic forms used in traditional Japanese and contemporary paper folding techniques. Explore a wide range of origami papers and discover the rich history of this medium. Learn how line, texture, color and shape can be used to turn flat sheets of paper in the three-dimensional sculptures of birds, flowers, animals and more.
