Week 1, July 6-10
Animalia THIS CLASS IS FULL

Discover how animals have been represented by diverse cultures throughout history. Experiment with papier-mâché, oil pastels, watercolor, charcoal, decorative papers and more to create unique artworks reflecting your personal vision and inspired by the cultures and animals studied.

Reuse, Recycle, Renew THIS CLASS IS FULL

Instructor: Rachel Dunavant
As consumers, it is easy to take for granted the items we use and discard. Discuss environmental issues and reuse fabric swatches from old clothing, found objects and embellishments to re-create custom artworks such as fashion accessories, wall hangings and sculptures. Artists such as Adia Millett, Joseph Cornell and Jean Dubuffet provide creative inspiration throughout the course.

Find inspiration in CAC’s summer exhibition, Art of Glass 2, and experiment with different techniques to create fused glass jewelry, fused glass bowl, cast glass sculpture, a reverse glass painted tile and more.

Eco-Flags

Create awareness about the condition of our rivers and watersheds by creating a series of eco-flags that can be displayed outdoors where the breeze will send the well wishes of each artist throughout the community. Learn to draw and print water dwellers such as fish, water plants and crustaceans, as well as animals, birds and flowers that are native to the river area that will decorate your flags.

Fun-damentals of Clay   this class is full

Learn the fundamentals of hand-building with clay including coiling, extrusion, slumping, scoring, slipping and slabs, as well as surface decoration and texture. Take inspiration from contemporary ceramic artists for projects ranging from traditional Navajo coiling vessels to nature inspired extrusion sculptures.

Week 3, July 20-24
Crazy Constructions

Create an architecturally inspired sculpture such as a castle, bridge, tower or a fantastic structure from your imagination. Experiment with a variety of media while you learn sculpture techniques, create armature supports and build surface and texture.

Come to the Circus

Explore the world of clowns, seals, elephants, lions and dancing poodles through drawing, painting and sculpture projects with a teacher who was actually in the circus!

Week 4, July 27-July 31

Art in the Park

Create drawings of the flora and fauna of First Landing State Park. Use these drawings back in the CAC studio as inspiration for watercolor and resist paintings, hand-colored prints and a beautiful painted nature portfolio. Students will meet at CAC on Monday, Thursday and Friday and at First Landing State Park on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Claymation (For ages 9-11) this class is full

Use teamwork to write your script, sculpt your characters, create props and shoot your short video, complete with sound. Guests are invited to your premiere on the last day.

Drawing and Painting Horses THIS CLASS IS FULL

Spend a day sharpening your skills of observation as you sketch magnificent horses in motion at the Arbor Gate Farm in Pungo. Use your discoveries to develop finished artworks at the CAC studios using a variety of drawing and painting media. Students will meet at Arbor Gate Farm in Pungo on Wednesday and at CAC on Thursday and Friday.

Animation Station

“And this year’s Oscar goes to…you!” Create your very own animated short video using just your imagination and drawing talents. Each student receives a video of the class animations. Guests are invited to your premiere on the last day.

Artist Trading Cards

Experiment with one of the newest crazes to hit the art world. Artist Trading Cards (ATC’s) are miniature artworks that are made to be traded between artists. Use a variety of techniques from painting to collage to create over a dozen ATC’s and then trade one of more with fellow artists on the last day of class.

Week 6, August 10-14
In Your Own World

Build a fantastical sculptural diorama inspired by your own world of imagination. Create a unique and personal series of paintings using “your own world” as inspiration. Explore a variety of mediums and techniques during the course ranging from paint, cardboard, found objects, altered toys, magazines and lots more.

Creative Puppets

Use a variety of materials such as papier-mâché, fabric, clay and paint to create unique handmade finger puppets, stick puppets and hand puppets. Learn how to make, string and operate a simple marionette.

Week 7, August 17-21
Murals that Matter

Design and create a collaborative mural using paint, oil pastels, markers and more. The final mural will be donated to a local non-profit organization. Students will produce works of art that are beneficial to the community while learning the benefits of teamwork. Drawing and painting techniques will be emphasized throughout the course. Each student will take home preliminary designs as well as an individual small mural and photograph of the group project.

My Generation

Define your individuality and your generation by creating a unique and exciting body of artwork that reflects your personality and interests. Experiment with a variety of drawing techniques and materials each day as you examine your daily actions and routines to generate meaningful and personal artwork.

Week 8, August 24-28
Origami Paper Sculpture

Learn the basic forms used in traditional Japanese and contemporary paper folding techniques. Explore a wide range of origami papers and discover the rich history of this medium. Learn how line, texture, color and shape can be used to turn flat sheets of paper in the three-dimensional sculptures of birds, flowers, animals and more.

3-D Spree

Learn a range of sculpture and assemblage techniques and turn ordinary objects into extraordinary
3-D artworks. Materials such as wood, clay, foam core and recycled objects will be used.
