Week 1, July 7 to 11

Drawing Big and Tall

Instructor: Philip Holman

Using traditional and non-traditional drawing media, experiment with unusual drawing methods to create large, bold artworks. Experiment with scale and its effects on how artwork is created and viewed. Explore the possibilities of drawing large scale and focus on personal expression and style.

Reuse, Recycle, Renew

Instructor: Rachel Nicole Dunavant

As consumers, it is easy to take for granted the items we use and discard. Through Reuse, Recycle, Renew, students discuss environmental issues and reuse fabric swatches from old clothing, found objects and embellishments to re-create custom artworks such as fashion accessories, wall hangings and sculptures. Artists such as Adia Millett, Joseph Cornell and Jean Dubuffet provide creative inspiration throughout the course.

Week 2, July 14 to 18

Ceramic Forms: Vessel, Sculpture, and Wall Pieces

Instructor: Barbara Kobylinska

From beginning hand-building clay techniques to intermediate projects, students learn the fundamentals of ceramics while investigating natural, human and animal forms. Explore a variety of techniques including pinch pots and slab vessels and experiment with pattern, texture and finishing techniques.

Monotypes: Painting and Printmaking in Half the Time

Experiment with monotype processes, which blend the speed, fluidity and expressiveness of painting with the serendipitous nature of printmaking. Create a series of sequential thematic prints and focus on personal expression and style.

Original You: Screen-Printed T-Shirt

How does what you wear reflect who you are? Tap into your inner designer as you design and print a personal t-shirt that reflects the “original you” using screen-printing techniques.

Leave your Mark: Batik

Instructor: Helena Navarro

Learn the ancient tradition of batik, a technique comprised of applying melted wax to fabric and dyeing the fabric to reveal the characteristic deep rich colors and fine crinkle lines of batik. Leave your mark on a batik banner full of personal meaning and style.

Express Yourself!

Explore two-dimensional and relief painting techniques to create interesting compositions that explore the ways that artists can communicate visually. Experiment with acrylic paint and a variety of found objects such as fabric, metal, paper and plaster to express messages that are personally and culturally relevant.

Week 5, August 4-8

Encaustic Painting

Instructor: Martine Strohmeyer

Discover the ancient technique of encaustic painting to create a series of prints. Encaustic paint is made from pure pigment, beeswax and resin and is applied hot using a variety of tools, revealing a velvety matte finish when cool. The medium can then be textured, scraped, incised, embossed, sculpted and mixed media can be imbedded. Experiment with a variety of designs and embellishments to create unique and original artworks.

Art for the Masses: Printmaking and Popular Culture

Explore a variety of printmaking techniques including, woodcut, linocut and collagraph. Express ideas that are important to you and create artworks with personal meaning through this graphic medium.

The Glass Lab

Instructor: Ali Rogan

Experiment in the glass lab and explore how glass can be recycled from everyday use into art, using techniques such as glass casting and fusing amongst others. Create a cast glass sculpture, mixed media glass collages, fused glass jewelry, a mosaic glass block and more.

Using a variety of materials, create handmade books of different shapes, techniques and styles and experiment with different methods of embellishment.

Origami Paper Sculpture

Instructor: Rich Gray

Learn the basic forms used in traditional Japanese and contemporary paper folding techniques. Explore a wide range of origami papers and discover the rich history of this medium. Learn how line, texture, color and shape can be used to turn flat sheets of paper in the three-dimensional sculptures of birds, flowers, animals and more.

What’s Your Style?

Explore and define your evolving artistic style and develop a body of work that sends a message about you! Experiment with collage, assemblage, self-portraiture and visual poetry using an assortment of mixed media.
