The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia invites its members to join Art of Glass 2 artist Hank Murta Adams for a Master Class based on his glass making techniques, materials and artistic viewpoint utilizing an on-site hot shop.

Hank Murta Adams is a sculptor who has been working in the medium of glass for over 30 years. He is also an innovative teacher who currently works as the creative director at Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center located in Millville, New Jersey. Dedicated to his studio practice and the interdisciplinary vibe of the Wheaton community, Adams has also served as a visiting faculty member at prestigious schools throughout the country, such as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Media Blend

Stepping outside of the box of preconceived or “learned” ways of seeing can be unnerving. As artists, sticking with the tried and true can actually become the stiff and stagnant. Uncover and discover exciting blends of mixed media materials and explore a renewed and refreshing way of expressing your creativity. Experiment with a variety of drawing and painting materials and create handmade prints, stamps and stencils. Each session will build on the last, so that by week seven participants will feel more inclined to experiment on their own and express their ideas and world views in a deeply personal, relevant and invigorating style.

Color Theory (Oil)
Instructor: Karla Mann
Learn to create mood, warm and cool hues and perspective by studying the properties of color. Students begin with oil painting basics such as canvas preparation, appropriate tools and materials, and brushstrokes. Once these fundamentals are mastered, students advance to more complex color applications such as under-painting and glazing techniques. Students discuss the importance of color theory and compositional balance. Oil media only.

Translate photographic images into canvas masterpieces in this course inspired by classic oil painting techniques. How to Take Better Photographs

Learn a variety of tips and techniques to take better photographs. Emphasis is placed on hands-on assignments, image aesthetics and viewing the work of historical and contemporary photographers to provide inspiration. Students are required to bring a few prints of recently taken photographs to the first class and each week thereafter. No computer skills will be covered in this class.

Introduction to Digital Photography
Learn how to make the most of your digital camera and create better photographs by taking control of image creation and learning the basics of manual digital camera functions such as ISO settings, white balance, image resolution, shutter speeds and aperture settings. Classes will include hands- on assignments and students will look at historical and contemporary photographers to better inform their own process and learn about image aesthetics. Basic computer techniques for downloading and copying image files as well as uploading photos to file sharing and printing sites will also be covered. No photo editing skills will be covered in this class.

>FINE CRAFTS

Cast Glass, Silicone Molds and Lost Wax Casting
Instructor: Ali Rogan
Explore a technique typically used in the creation of bronze sculptures, but this time using glass.
Use small found objects or create your own that will first be made into a silicone mold. A wax positive is created next and added to a finished wax base of your own design and invested before the mold is steamed to remove the wax positive inside and then replaced with glass for the kiln casting process. Students are encouraged to bring drawings or photographs for design inspiration and instructor will also provide sample designs and patterns

Artist Trading Cards

Do you have difficulty finding time to create art? Are you anxious to try a new technique, but are afraid to tackle it on a large scale? Artist Trading Cards (ATC’s) are miniature works of art, measuring 2.5” x 3.5” and can be created using any medium or technique. Experiment with a variety of mixed media assemblage, collage, painting and drawing techniques to create original miniature works of art. ATC’s are intended to be traded, not sold, and participants will be invited to trade with other students and the instructor at the end of the workshop.
