Art Camp 2010
Ages 9-11
Art Campers may attend morning courses, afternoon courses or both for a full day of Art Camp. Those registered for the full day should bring a non-perishable lunch, drink and snack and will be supervised by museum staff during a 30-minute lunch break.
CAC’s Compliance with Code of Virginia: Please note, in compliance with the Code of Virginia, no child is allowed to attend Art Camp for more than 25 days (or a total of five Art Camp weeks) during a three month period.
Week 1, July 5-9
Noisy, Smelly, Yummy Art

Investigate art with more that just your eyes! Each day create artwork that incorporates one of the five senses - taste, touch, sight, smell and sound. Paint, sculpt, draw and print artwork that will cause a sense-ation!

Imaginative Faces

Take inspiration from artists throughout history who created incredible and imaginative portraits. Use paint, pastels, charcoal and more to create portraits of family, friends and imaginary characters.

Use creative writing techniques and your imagination to write and illustrate your own comic book. Learn ways to depict movement and action through drawing using watercolor, markers, pens and more.

The Glass Lab Sorry, this class is full

Find inspiration in works of contemporary glass art and experiment with different techniques to create your own unique glass artworks. Create fused glass jewelry, a kiln carved portrait tile, a fused glass vase and a mixed media glass animal sculpture. Each day reveals a new technique and opportunity for creative expression.

Learn about contemporary art jewelry as you stretch your imagination of what jewelry can be. Experiment with plastics, polymer clay, beads, wire, balloons, recycled materials and lots more to create art that you can wear.

Animal Artz

Turn recyclable materials into an amazing animal art sculpture. Choose your favorite animal, either real or make believe and sculpt it from newspaper, boxes, grocery bags and more. Finish the surface with a glue solution and paint for a one-of-a-kind sculpture that is also kind to the environment!

Use teamwork to write a script, sculpt characters, create props and shoot a short video, complete with sound. Guests are invited to your premiere on the last day.

Drawing in the Galleries

Create paintings and drawings inspired by CAC’s summer exhibitions. Learn basic drawing skills, line, shape, value, proportion and more while sketching in the galleries. Get creative inspiration from the artworks on view and then return to the art studio to use your imagination and discover your own personal style.

Eco-Flags

Create awareness about the condition of our rivers and watersheds by creating a series of eco-flags that can be displayed indoors or out. Learn to draw and print water dwellers such as fish, water plants and crustaceans, as well as animals, birds and flowers that are native to the river area that will decorate your flags.

How can you show movement and emotion in your artwork? Come explore the art of the Abstract Expressionists through a variety of interactive drawing and painting techniques. Create your own method of “action art” to make a personalized portfolio of work.

Hand-Building in Clay Sorry, this class is full

Instructor: Janet Yousey
Learn the fundamentals of hand-building with clay including coiling, extrusion, pinch pots and slabs as well as surface decoration and texture. Create objects, either functional or sculptural that serve a purpose in your life or can be shared with family and friends.

Folk Art Animals

Create a folk art inspired brightly patterned animal painting on wood that expresses your personality and characteristics. Use sandpaper, gesso and other tools to complete this whimsical and unique painting.

Week 8, August 23-27
Origami: Destination Japan

Learn how line, texture, color and shape can be used to turn flat sheets of paper in to three-dimensional sculptures of pagodas, festival dolls, samurai helmets, iris gardens and lots more. Use a wide range of origami patterned paper to create your own versions of traditional and contemporary origami designs inspired by Japanese culture, gardens and celebrations.

Use a variety of materials such as papier-mâché, fabric, clay and paint to create unique handmade finger puppets, stick puppets and hand puppets. Learn how to make, string and operate a simple marionette.

Artist Trading Cards

Experiment with one of the newest crazes to hit the art world. Artist Trading Cards (ATC’s) are miniature artworks that are made to be traded between artists. Learn a variety of art techniques from painting and drawing to collage to create over a dozen ATC’s and then trade one of more with fellow artists on the last day of class.

Art Outside the Door

What wonders will you discover when you open the door of the art studio? Explore the observed and also the imagined worlds of plants, birds, insects, small animals on the grounds of CAC. Discoveries will be recorded in a variety of formats including pen, ink, watercolor, oil pastel on acetate, hand stamping, printmaking and sculpture.
