There more than 1.3 million Americans that have committed to protecting and serving their homeland. These brave men and women are deservingly some of the most respected citizens in the country and we are forever indebted to the time and lives that have been volunteered for our freedom. America believes that military veterans should not have to sacrifice a college education due to their service in the military. There are many college grants and scholarships for Military service men and women, and also their families. You could have served in any of the following and should be eligible for scholarships: Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy, Army, or Coast Guard.
There are many scholarships offered from the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and these range anywhere from full-tuition coverage to room and board funding and to money given for books and other fees. These scholarships are awarded to service members based upon merit and not upon financial need.
By using these scholarships to earn your degree, you can open up new doors and can reach your career goals. Scholarships are an outstanding way to pay for your education because you do not have to repay the money, so you are not left with significant debt once you finish your studies. Some of these scholarships even come in the form of a tuition discount, so that you will end up paying less while receiving a first-class education.
American Legion Scholarship – This is offered through the American Legion and the requirements include being a member of the American Legion, the Auxiliary, or the Sons of The American Legion and having all dues from the past two years paid. Another requirement is that the applicant has already completed a year of college and desires financial help with obtaining an undergraduate degree.
AMVET Scholarships – These have been made available through AMVETS or American Veterans and is received annually by active military and veterans, the daughters and sons of veterans and also the grandchildren of veterans, even if the veteran is now deceased.
Horatio Alger Military Veterans Scholarship – This scholarship is available for those who served for the United States Military in the Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan or for those veterans who have served in Operation Iraqi Freedom any time starting on September 11, 2001.
Military Order of the Purple Heart Scholarship – This scholarship has been created for those who are recipients of a Purple Heart or are a child, grandchild, or spouse of a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart of a Veteran who died of wounds or during action.
The Army Women’s Foundation Legacy Scholarships – The Army Women’s Foundation (AWF) places a very high value on education and as a result of that belief they are dedicated to helping women and children of women who are or have served in the Army pursue higher education through financial assistance.
Troops to Teachers – This program has been established to help veterans become educators. TTT offers financial assistance, employment referral, and also counseling.
NBCC Foundation – The NBCC Foundation offers a scholarship program for service members and veterans who are would like to take on a career in professional counseling, specifically counseling for those who have served in the military. The NBCC Foundation provides financial assistance to students who choose or commit to a CACREP accredited counseling program.
Pat Tillman Foundation – A Leadership Through Action – Tillman Military Scholars program has been established through the Pat Tillman Foundation and is accepts the applications of service members from every branch of the United States military regardless of whether on active duty, or retired. It provides financial assistance for a variety of educational pursuits including trade degrees or certifications, undergraduate and graduate, private, vocational and public school. This scholarship extends to children and spouses of service members and veterans.
