CAC Offers Free Art Education to Title I Schools
Student Art Start (SAS) is funded in part by SurferSanctuary

Virginia Beach, VA – The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia (CAC) is bringing fourth-grade students from Virginia Beach Title I Schools to the museum to participate in their Student Art Start (SAS) program. SAS is designed to combine contemporary visual art with core Standards of Learning (S.O.L’s). Through funds raised by SurferSanctuary, a local philanthropic organization, CAC is able to provide free SAS programming on a first-come, first-serve basis for over 2,000 students.

The SAS program provides a one-hour docent-led tour of contemporary art exhibitions and a one-hour hands-on art activity conducted by professional artists from the Hampton Roads community. Teachers who sign-up for tours receive pre-visit and post-visit materials created by CAC to provide additional enrichment opportunities. These materials touch on the topics presented in the tour and go further by prompting classroom discussions. The interactive tours rely on discourse between the docents and students and offer a unique experience for each CAC exhibition. The art activities correlate to the exhibitions and allow students to take an original artwork home. Students are also given Free Family Passes, which allow them to return to CAC with up to five family members for another visit. Tours can be scheduled through the CAC Education department at 757.425.0000, ext. 29.

SurferSanctuary is a non-profit organization created by surfers whose members acknowledge and appreciate the gifts they have received through participation in the the sport. SurferSanctuary raises funds each year in order to deliver charitable gifts to a broad spectrum of community organizations. SurferSanctuary locates community need and facilitates appropriate public relationships in order to obtain resources, thus creating positive public synergy.

CAC is located at 2200 Parks Avenue at the entrance to Interstate-264 in Virginia Beach. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors, students and active military. CAC members and children under the age of four are admitted free of charge. For information call 757-425-0000 or visit the CAC’s Web site at www.cacv.org
