New Waves 2006 is a regional, multi-media, juried exhibition presented by the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia (CAC). This year marks the 11th Anniversary of the exhibition, which demonstrates CAC’s commitment to showcasing the talent of the regions’s contemporary artists. To celebrate the success of New Waves over the past 10 years, CAC has increased the total prize monies to $6500. Jurors Andrea Pollan and Stephen Bennett Philips will award prizes at 6:30pm on the night of the opening reception.

>GUIDELINES
Media
Only original works completed within the last two years and not previously shown at CAC will be accepted. All media, styles, techniques and subject matter are eligible.
Eligibility
Artists age 18 and up from the cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, Richmond and Yorktown are considered regional and eligible for entry.
Entry Requirements
Artists may submit a maximum of five (5) slides of individual works. Slides must be standard 2" by 2" 35mm slides, placed in a slide sheet. Glass or metal slides will not be accepted. Each slide must be labeled on the front with the following information: artist’s name; title of work; year completed; medium; dimensions; and either the sales price or not-for-sale (NFS) insurance value. On the upper right-hand corner of each slide, place an arrow indicating “top.”
Indicate in the lower left corner of each slide the slide number corresponding to the slide description area of the application form.
New this year!
You may submit digital images on a compact disc. The images must be in jpeg format with a resolution of 300dpi. Number each image 1through 5 to correspond to the image description area of the application form. Label each image with your name; medium; dimensions; and either the sales price or not-for-sale (NFS) insurance value.
Slides/CDs will not be returned for selected works. Slides/CDs submitted must be of works available for the duration of the exhibition. No substitutions or extractions will be allowed once selected.

Incomplete or late entries will be returned at the artist’s expense.
Slides will not be returned for selected works.
Works selected for exhibition must have a completed label affixed to the lower right-hand corner on the back of the work. Label must include the artist’s name, address, telephone number, title of work, medium, year the work was completed, dimensions and the price or NFS insurance value.
All works in New Waves 2005 must be suitably framed and ready for installation. Two-dimensional work must not exceed 6' vertical and 8' horizontal, including the frame.
The installation of three-dimensional works requiring special handling must be coordinated with the curator. CAC reserves the right to exclude any work from the exhibition which is too problematic to install.
CAC reserves the right to photograph and reproduce any work in New Waves for publicity purposes.

Delivery and Pick-up of Work
Artists are responsible for arranging the delivery and pick-up of their work at the designated dates and times. It is reccommended that work be hand delivered.
Work will be accepted at CAC on Thursday and Friday, May 11 and 12, 2006 from 10 am until 6 pm. Shipped work must arrive at CAC no later than Friday, May 12, 2006. Shipped work must be in reusable packing crates and must be accompanied by a check or money order covering return freight. No COD arrangements will be made. Shipped work arriving without the proper return preparations will not be the responsibility of CAC. Insurance coverage for works in transit to and from CAC is the responsibility of the artist. Works not retrieved byJuly 31, 2006 will become property of CAC.
Commission
The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia will charge a 30 percent commission on the sales price of any works sold during the exhibition.
Jurying and Notification
The jurors will review all entries and make selections. Notification of acceptance and nonacceptance will be mailed by April 14, 2006. Information regarding acceptance will not be available until that time. No telephone inquiries, please.
Jurors
Andrea Pollan, director of The Curator’s Office, a micro-gallery and work space in Washington, D.C., has worked for over twenty years in the visual fine arts. Trained as an art historian at Yale University, she has organized more than ninety exhibitions of contemporary art for museums and galleries regionally and nationally. She has written numerous catalogs and exhibition brochures. Pollan has juried scores of art exhibitions and art fairs in the region including an exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
She served as exhibitions director of the McLean Project for the Arts in Virginia and was curator at the Arlington Arts Center prior to that. Having worked for the Trust for Museum Exhibitions, the Yale University Art Gallery, and two regional commercial galleries, Pollan manages several corporate art collections and has broadened that focus recently to include several private collections. She recently curated The Creation: Tim Rollins + K.O.S., which exhibited at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, Maryland and at CAC, and also assisted the curators of CAC’s upcoming exhibition, Me, Myself & I: Artist Self-Portraits from the Heather & Tony Podesta Collection.

Stephen Bennett Philips is the curator at the Philips Collection, America’s first museum of modern art, located in Washington, D.C. The Philips Collection, founded in 1921 in the home of Duncan Philips, includes an outstanding assortment of works by renowned artists including Van Gogh, Klee, Rothko and O’Keefe. He most recently curated Sean Scully: Wall of Light, an exhibition of abstract oil paintings, watercolors, pastels and aquatints. He also curated Margaret Bourke-White: The Photography of Design, which was exhibited at the Frick Art & Historical Center and the Oaklahoma City Museum of Art in 2005. Philips was the author of catalogue essays for both exhibitions. He has juried numerous art shows on the East Coast.
