2009 Commemorative Poster
This year's winning poster artwork was created by local legend Will Corr. A Virginia Beach native and First Colonial High School/Virgina Wesleyan College alumni, Corr has participated in the show for 16 years. “It is my hometown,” he said. “It has always been one of my best shows and I get to see friends and family. Can't beat it!”
His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the country, including a 2004 exhibition at CAC titled Will Corr: A Collection of New Works.
The poster design is part of Corr’s North End series. “Not only is this series directly related to the North End of Virginia Beach, the works are also more graphic and design oriented compositionally,” he explained. “I figured they would make a great poster once text was added.”
Corr revealed special significance to the scene depicted in the poster. “I grew up surfing Virginia Beach. We used to check the waves right there at what I believe is 40th St. There used to be a house with a little white picket fence and a beautifully manicured yard that sat right on the oceanfront across from the old Cavalier Hotel. The fence framed the ocean behind it so perfectly. I began making these North End paintings as an homage to my personal experience and connection to the oceanfront; sort of a narrative.”
The poster will be available during the Boardwalk Art Show & Festival for $20.
