The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia’s (CAC’s) 13th annual, juried exhibition, highlights and supports Virginia artists while providing an opportunity to purchase art from the museum and build a collection. This year's exhibition features paintings, drawings, photographs and installation works by contemporary artists from across the Commonwealth.
Juror Anne Surak, director of Project 4 in Washington, D.C., chose 50 works from 17 artists. “This year’s exhibition features artists who are in sync with national and international trends in contemporary art,” said CAC associate curator Natalie Bray.
The opening reception for New Waves 2008 is on Friday, April 11, from 7-10pm at CAC. Enjoy refreshments, live music and a chance to be among the first to purchase works from the show. CAC guests are invited to join the excitement as winners are announced by the juror at the Awards Ceremony at 8pm. Awards for exhibited work include Best-in-Show, $5,500; Second Place, $2,000; Third Place, $1,000; and two Honorable Mentions, $500 each.
“These works are highly collectible, and reflect the caliber of art in fairs such as Scope, Pulse, Frieze and Art Basel,” said Bray. “The juror, Anne Surak, comes from a successful commercial gallery in D.C. that represents emerging and mid-career artists. Her understanding of the art market makes her New Waves selections especially significant.”
