by our heirs forever:
"By Our Heirs Forever" is a thematic, juried exhibition of contemporary Virginia artists working in all visual arts media. It is shown alongside Magna Carta & Four Foundations of Freedom. All of the works in the exhibition illuminate moments in history when individual rights and freedom were extended to include an ever-expanding citizenry. The exhibition will include the 1215 Lincoln Cathedral exemplar of Magna Carta, a Dunlap broadside of the Declaration of Independence, James Wilson's original draft of the U.S. Constitution, a Lincoln-signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation, and artifacts from the Civil Rights and Women's Suffrage movements.
This thematic exhibition will be juried by two outstanding museum professionals. Andrea Douglas, Ph.D., is the Curator of Collections and Exhibitions from University of Virginia Art Museum. Jack Rasmussen, Ph.D., is the Director and Curator of the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, Washington, D.C.
Nearly 800 years ago in England, the foundation for modern concepts of democracy and individual rights was formulated in a document titled Magna Carta. Issued by the King John under pressure from English barons, Magna Carta is widely regarded as the most significant and earliest statement of social and political liberties in western history. The Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, and numerous other key historical precepts were all predicated on the 63 tenets of Magna Carta.
Today, through the ravages of time, only four of the original 1215 exemplars of the Magna Carta document exist. The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, in partnership with Lincoln Cathedral in Lincolnshire, U.K. and Virginia Beach 2007, is proud to present Magna Carta for American visitors at CAC in spring 2007. Four hundred years after first landing of the English settlers at Cape Henry in Virginia Beach prior to the establishment of the Jamestown colony, Magna Carta continues to be a touchstone for free expression, political liberty and constitutional law.
